De Restrictions

Hi. I read some googled items that these range along with some bikes are 48bhp but because of EU regulations are restricted due to and inline with the weight of the bikes.the weight limit is 175kg - 48bhp but if less restricted accordingly... ie. KTM 390 restricted to 43bhp & G310R restricted to 34bhp
So has any found the restrictions or have any idea...

It's a power to weight ratio. for the A2 licence it's a maximum of 0.2kW/kg or a minimum of 4.6kg/PS, the G310R has an actual ratio of 4.65kg/PS (slightly better power to weight ratio than a 2000 Audi S8). 1PS= 0.985HP. The G310R is not actually restricted as it falls under the limit. The Duke is restricted for the A2 licence as it is otherwise slightly over the limit.

I think the duke 390 is mechanically (or electrically) restricted by the dealer for A2 licence holders, once you have your full licence you may need to take the bike to the dealer to remove the restriction.

We have a power to weight ratio of 0.15kW/kg in Australia for learner approved bikes. Seems like the G310R might be slightly above this at .1577kW/kg, however, it is still on the list of approved bikes.

If you replace the battery and exhaust, you're probably looking at a power to weight ratio of around 0.165kW/kg.

I think some concessions are made based on number of cylinders and cc range.

The Duke 390 weighs a little less than a G310 and has 43bhp due to the larger engine.
So if that bike is A2 compliant then the BMW will be.
I doubt very much that the G310 has any restrictions in the engine.

The only issue is emissions restrictions generally, both bikes will likely run better with a fuelling box, it makes the Duke run smoother at low RPM

There’s been much discussion about it over on the KTM forums!

390 Duke weight.

The KTM 390 Duke weighs in at 149 kg's dry, add up the fluids and you will find it weighs more than the G310 R at 158,5 kg's with a 90% fuel load.

Yes sorry l was mistaken The 2017 onwards Duke 390 weighs 153kg wet
Similar to the BMW.

But it’s still got 43bhp. So if the Duke 390 is A2 compliant then the similar weight BMW with 10bhp less will not have been restricted as there is no need.

I really like the look of the trail version of the G310
I would probably have gone for that, if it had been available when l bought the KTM.
