Looks great comstar. There is so much you can do with the R (even without fabrication tools).

Highly recommend painting the chrome exhaust parts also

do you need a special type of paint on the exhaust? can I just use the usual paint can from the hardware store?

You will need a special heat resistant paint, however, these should be available at auto stores.

Just engine paint from the local auto store.

Your chain is loose.
When you sell it, your bike will lose so much value with the custom paint.
