Best way to refit sidestand springs?

In short: I took the sidestand off to shorten it, and am now having trouble putting the springs back on. Springs first and then leg on? Or leg on, and somehow stretch the springs enough to fit them on?

My bike is a GS, post- recall for sidestand mount reinforcement. New sidestand was way too long...

Anyone found a good way to get the springs on please?

These is always the washers/coins trick, but that is not suitable for the double spring of the GS.

This brake spring tool looks neat if you have the room to work.

You could probably make something like this puller out of Number 8 wire:

G0MYW and lost in space like this.
