The bike is quite capable.

Good to know, very impressive, maybe the extra fairing of the 310GS makes it a little easier. I've done about 900 on my Suzuki GS500, which is much quieter at highway speeds and couldn't imagine doing that on my 310R.

The R, depending on hills and wind gets tiring to maintain momentum for long periods of time after 65/70mph and seems like it's hard on the bike. I know it will do it, but probably not the best and also noisy.

I feel like parallel twin 300s, like the Yamaha R3 do better on the highway than the single as well.

I live a hour north of Richmond, the 310 is great for riding on Rt1.

Yeah I've heard that PTwins would be better on the highway as well but I'm not really looking to go on the highway on a bike... as of right now. Maybe when I graduate to a larger bike (or add a second on to the garage) I'll start doing some highway trips.

Do you use Morton's for service and such? If so, what has your experience been with them? I'm looking to move up near there probably around the time I get the bike so I'll most likely end up purchasing/ servicing my bike there and as far as I know, they're the only game in town except in the DC area. Morton's seems to be straight up in their dealing and service but I don't know how much of that is genuine or if it's "sales".

Yes, Morton's is the closest BMW dealer to me. The owner seems nice, I had a good experience....went there to purchase but the bike was already sold. I purchased the bike out of state and recently took it there for the first service, just to make it official, but usually do my own maintenance work.

JakeP,

welcome to our forum.
Hope all the answers above have helped you.
enjoy riding either the R or the GS
They are both great (I prefer the R because of the seat height).

Decide what you intend to do with it. For me, the choice was easy...I sat on both and the GS felt great while the R was really cramped. Plus, I knew I was going to take it on long trips through multiple countries and wanted the GS for rough roads and being able to stand up on the pegs.
