G310Rís Future May Be Inspired By Young Designers

Back in 2015, before BMW’s sub-500cc bike was set to hit the market, BMW Motorrad Italia Marketing Manager Andrea Ferrari launched a project with design students from the European Institute of Design (IED) in Italy.

With no background in automotive design and engineering, these students were given the challenge of creating concept designs based on the G310R as their final degree projects. After a year of hard work, the students have come up with are four renderings designed to be even more appealing to urban riders.

First up is a concept that was designed with female riders in mind. Dubbed Project BMW Savannah, its fairing features a 360į wraparound LED light for increased visibility at night and a haptic feedback blind spot monitoring system was included. There’s also a keyless ignition system in the form of a bracelet.

Then there’s the G310R Misto with fairing panels that works like a jigsaw puzzle. Pieces can be easily added or removed to suit each rider’s tastes and custom graphics can be uploaded via an online configurator. The customization possibilities are endless.

Lastly is a pair of concepts aimed at younger riders; the Street Race (blue) and the Supermoto (red). The traditional speedometer displays are missing from these bikes, instead they are replaced by the rider’s smartphone from which the bike’s settings can be customized. Drawing inspiration from the S1000R and R1200R, both G310R has been updated to look sportier.

Students have until June this year to develop and present their final concepts to BMW Motorrad Italia and the teachers at IED. The best ideas will be chosen and then, as a team, they will aim to produce a working prototype. Who knows, maybe a few of these features will make its way onto the next G310R variant.

The Street Race and the Supermoto just reminds me of the G310R, but with a different paint job and a few extra bits. Those may not be the most imaginative, but they do look production ready and that may be what BMW is looking for in their next concept.

Which one do you see being the most imaginative?

There is the newly launched TVS Apache RR310 based on the G310R's engine which looks absolutely gorgeous. I wonder if BMW will bring it to western markets, it certainly looks better than anything in its class.

I can see it happening....someday. TVS has no Western world network, so likely BMW will
throw on the RR plastics and market it here.
Just keep in mind how long it took for the R and GS to arrive.
However now that production is going it may be sooner than later.
Just don't hold your breath.
