G310R First Look!!

It has long been whispered that Motorrad was working on a sub 300cc bike. Last week those whispers turned into a shout when BMW officially unveiled the G310R a week before EICMA.

So what is the G310R?

BMW describes it as an all-new bike designed for “relaxed and stress-free riding" they say it has neither too little nor too much of anything. Oh really.

Lets be frank, the G310R is a shot across the bow of the 300cc offerings from Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. BMW is banking on its premium badge being enough to pull buyers into their camp.

The construction is unlike anything you've ever expected from BMW. Motivation comes from a 313cc DOHC single cylinder engine, making 34 hp at 9,500 RPM and 21 lb-ft of twist at 7,500 RPM. The tubular steel chassis comes from India, built by TVS Motor Company, the G310R is an out and out world market bike.

BMW says the G310R is capable of running on the diverse fuel qualities found world over as well as meeting all various emissions regulations.

Visually BMW echoed the larger S 1000 R roadster. From the headlamp to the graphics it's deja vu, in miniature! Wouldn't a mini S1000RR be nice as well?

Ergonomics are friendly with a relaxed position and low seat height, which should help the BMW appeal to newer riders across the globe. Pricing remains unannounced for now, but BMW is saying that the G310R should be expected in dealerships early in 2016.

Highlights from BMW:

  • Innovative liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts, backward-tilted cylinder and intake tract positioned at the front.
  • Output 25 kW (34 hp) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm.
  • Rigid tubular steel frame, upside-down fork and long swinging arm for a high degree of ride stability, precise steering response and sound handling.
  • Tyres 110/70 R 17 at front and 150/60 R 17 at rear.
  • High-performance brake system and ABS as standard.
  • Sophisticated ergonomics and multifunctional instrument cluster.
  • Low seat height of just 785 millimetres.
  • Dynamic roadster design with echoes of the S 1000 R.
  • Developed in Munich by BMW Motorrad – produced in India by cooperation partner TVS Motor Company.
  • Individually tailored optional accessories in the familiar high quality typical of BMW Motorrad

Will the quality of the G310R be lower than the motorcycles build in BMW's Berlin plant?
