Just had my order for an SW-Motech centre stand cancelled by UK disti Motohaus.com. Apparently there have been complaints about fitting the stand to the bike.

Motohaus reports that SW-Motech is saying:

"They checked the motorcycle again and found that BMW has such high frame tolerances that almost no bike is similar to another. Sadly there is not a center stand that will fit."

I'm not sure what this means. If the frame tolerances are that high, then the stand will fit them all. What I think they mean is that the frame tolerances are so *low*, they are not consistent enough for an aftermarket stand to fit reliably. Something to do with them being built in India? If so, not very reassuring.

Any thoughts?

Strange...

If true, that means no swingarm is positioned the same to the rest of the bike?

And how does a Thai welder manage to do one that works but not a German?

As far as I know, the frame specs are the same for the R and the GS
(if the design objective for BMW is to make a inexpensive entry level series why would they use 2 different frames?)

Again, strange answer.

Centre Stand for the R

I have been waiting for news about the stand for the R, and in the meantime I have spent money on other mods. The time has now come for
a centre stand,so, after reading all the posts, and it seems being mucked about by the aftermarket German supplier and the UK 'agent'
I have contacted, via Ebay, the supplier of the stand for MichealJ's GS- BMW G310gs 2017 2018 Centerstand Center Parking Stand- Moto Roar in Thailand. Assuming he can read English or get someone who can, because I certainly can't speak Thai. It will be interesting to see what kind of response i get back, if any. Will keep you posted.

Centre Stand for R update

In my previous post i said I would contact the BMW G310R centre stand supplier (Moto Roar, kindly supplied by Michael J) which i did, He is going to see if it is possible. to make a stand for the G.(as most of you know he already does one for the GS) below is the reply i got this morning.
Lets hope he succeeds.

That statement does not make sense to me.
Replace the word "tolerances" with "differences" and then it makes some sense.
If that is true, that there is inconsistencies with the frames, (sizing, strength, etc.) how did they pass inspections?
Something strange in their answer to these bikes.

I don't suppose the wizards at Rally Raid would be interested in looking at this problem for us R owners.I know its not an adventure bike (the R I mean not the GS) and by the amount of forum members interested in buying one must be in double figures, so it would probably be a profitable exercise, and what about non forum members? across the world?. I know dealers and suppliers(?) read these forums because my dealer told me he is a regular reader (only company rules forbid participation) I bet a small engineering firm could knock one of these stands up in a couple of days. Its a shame really that BMW cancelled this as an option, and very strange the reply received by fellow member ,Goldburg101 form the uk importer.

Emailed Rally Raid today on the recommendation of my local Motorrad Dealer! RR has no plans to create a stand for the R or GS.

Unless the guy in Thailand referred to in this thread comes up with one, I think we're stuck unless and until Motorrad or SW-Motech launch a revised version. None of the usual suspects, such as Wunderlich or Ilium Works, do anything.

The only thing I can see being a prob on home made stand is how it locks when operated, I would like a go at `home made` I did a rad protector, rear rack that don't need you scrap the grab handles and a mod to let me see the signal turn has not been cancelled, as you know in bright light and being small its not easy to see on the dash.

Emailed SW-Motech to see if they had anything to say directly on the issue.

This is what they said:

"It is correct that we have some problems with the center stand for this bike. We noticed that the production tolerance of the bike’s frame differs from bike to bike. Therefore, we are not able to offer a center stand which fits correctly.

BY the way: This is also the reason why we stopped selling the current version of the center stand."

I have replied asking if they might redesign the stand to allow for the variations, perhaps with slots instead of holes. I will post again if I get a reply, but it doesn't sound encouraging tbh.

BMW (Australia) has just listed a centre stand as an option.
Expensive, ain't it - as I suspected it would be.

The french Ebay seller claims to have six of the SW-Motech stands at about GBP145 + shipping so I have ordered one. Will see if they fulfil or refund, depending on what SWM has told them to do.

Even if it's a bit out I've got access to engineering tools to modify it if needs be - I can't believe it can be that much out.

I ordered an SW-Motech stand from the French Ebay seller who claimed to have six.

They have now said they have had to return them to SW-Motech due to fitting problems and my order has been cancelled and my money refunded.

So, BMW Motorrad isn't selling one (although people are reporting that they are listing one - my local dealer says no longer listed and no bulletin on when it might be back), SW-Motech has withdrawn its stand from sale. Where does that leave us?

Dave - will you ask the Thai manufacturer if they will ship abroad, please?

Thanks

I managed to get a SW-Motech centre stand for my G310R before they were recalled. I fitted it this morning without any major problems even though the spring anchor bracket is very fiddly to fit. Everything lined up as it should and it seems to work OK. I haven't managed to fit the return spring yet so I will wait till a friend comes around to my house to help me but it doesn't look like I will have any problems. I haven't take any photos as there doesn't seem any point if they have been recalled. I wonder if the recall has anything to do with the strict German TUV regulations?

A center stand is something I REALLY wanted with the G310R as it helps out with storage in my small garage.

So sad to hear that SW-Motech pulled theirs off the shelves... BUT on the US BMW site, the option for a center stand is there. So I think they will have it available soon? If I have to get it from the dealer, so be it ... I just want a center stand!

Hoping to hear back from my dealer soon...

Updating! The stand turned up and was installed about a month ago, took my friendly mechanic about an hour, reasonably straightforward he said. I hadn't had a centre stand before, was pleasantly surprised to find it's easy to get the bike on and off it. Bit more tricky with hard cases on as I can't get so close.
Off topic but I'm currently in Vietnam, enjoying being surrounded by the gentle purr of singles (Honda scooters mostly). Back home to my GS next week 🙂
