hi Yawp,
sorry you've got this problem that too many of us suffer from. [see the vast number of posts about it]
I really don't think bmw really know what to do.! [ the bike was designed in a hot climate]
And certainly the dealers are no better .
There are many different little things to do that each help just a little.
Lighter oil helped my 310. the original bike used 15/50 which is like syrup in cold weather.
I now use 5/40 and that has made a different.
Cracking open the throttle to start another good tip.
A fully charged battery - essential.
In very cold weather I had to shove a fan heater under ther bike cover while I had breakfast.!!
Most of all getting some mileage on the bike/engine seems to have loosened it all up.
Like you and many others I am very dissappointed in bmw for making such a balls-up.
This bike was meant to introduce us all to a life of bmw bikes - not me the company. the 310 , dealer attitude is to say the least is poor [in my experience]
In future I'll go back to Honda
Having said all this I've stuck with my 310, I do my own servicing - use a local independant bike shop when needed.
Good luck with what ever you decide
