That will be where the oxygen sensor goes I think.

that's an interesting point ...yes Lambda sensor.
BUT
on the stock BMW the catalyst is in the exhaust box - Sensor before Catalyst
In the photo you show, the catalyst is separate and has been moved, thus the sensor is After the catalyst.
Not sure if this affects the ecu in any way.?

That's no catalyst, just a bulge similar to the bulge on the Akra stainless exhaust system.

Excuse the silly question, but what is the purpose of the 'bulge'? As far as my limited understanding of gas-flow dynamics goes, this would cause turbulence within the system and reduce efficiency!

it most likely has no purpose at all
