Hello and happy holidays to everyone who is celebrating,
i'm a new rider, 22y.o., and i just got my drivers lisence a month ago, and a few days ago i bought my first ever bike, my g310r from 2018, used with about 4000km, like new. As i rode it the first couple of times, everything was ok, clutch ok, everything normal and running smoothly. The previous owner as well as my uncle who has experience with bmw bikes and naked bikes in general, recommended i'd take it to the mechanic's for an oil change, simply because it had't been used by the previous owner for a while. I did just that, and on Monday, when i took it back, it was a completely different bike. It started shutting off on red lights, and i told myself it just was the clutch, that i was letting it go to quickly (even though that was not the case). Soon enough when on 2nd gear and as i was going 35 km/h on a road like a highway, the bike started a jerking motion, like someone was pulling the clutch and letting it go too quickly, or like i was revving and letting it go. I got very scared, but i managed to pull up by the side of the road safely, and called the mechanic. He told me it was probably nothing, but now it happens every time, even when im on 1st gear. Also the check engine light is on when this happens. Am i doing something wrong, or is there a problem with the gearbox/transmission?
PS: english is not my 1st language so sorry if anything does not make sense, i'll try to explain if anything i'm saying does not make sense.
thanks in advance

Seems like it worked well and then did not. With a trip to mechanic in the middle.
I would return to mechanic. If towing is option it would be smart, stalling can get you hurt. Plus it’s possible to damage your unit.
Good Luck and congrats on selecting the best way to get about, motorbikes

If the mechanic was a BMW dealer, have your uncle test ride it to confirm what you're seeing and then have him accompany you to discuss with the BMW dealer/mechanic. If the mechanic wasn't a BMW dealer, take it to a BMW dealer.

I've experienced that jerky behaviour too. It was alarming, but it passed...your bike doesn't have enough KMs on it to be behaving this badly, but here's a few notes;

  • The most obvious cause is a bad spark, but with 4k km, it's still new. If the bike wasn't abused, it's likely not the case.
  • Try some high-octane fuel for a little while. I run 87 all year long (except over the winter storage, when I put in 94), but if previous owners let it sit around with fuel additives like ethanol, it could have left some junk in your fuel system. Run some expensive gas for a bit to see if it helps clean out the gunk. Go back to 87 later. Read about injector cleaner or fuel stabilizer... It might help, but do some research before you start using that stuff too much.
  • Check and adjust the clutch and cables. I was having a terrible time with shifting for a bit, until I adjusted my clutch - so much better after a quick adjustment!
  • Accept that you are riding a single-cylinder bike. We feel every characteristic of this buzzy little engine, so if fuel delivery (and throttle technique) isn't smooth, you will feel it! If I'm accelerating, fuel delivery / power output is smooth. If I'm coasting (at speed), you'll feel little surges.

I love my bike and I drive the **** out of it, but it is a small engine.

Good luck
