The method that I'm using to put the rubber back on the pegs is as follows:
- user 'needle nose pliers'
- put one side on the rubber above the 'round' hole in the pegs
- insert the pliers from underneath through the round hole
- grab the rubber with the plyers and get one side (half) of the 'round' rubber into the hole
- then do the second half
- repeat

It works for me every time. While it 'feels' like you can rip the rubber, it actual doesn't damage it and works just fine.
