How can I add threading to my handle bar?

I have the Protaper's Evo ADV (adventure bend) handlebar and I want to try to fit my SWMototech Kobra Handguards these need the threading (like the OEM handlebars)

I'm hoping itlle fit even tho I'm not 100% on the clamp fits with the new handle bar.

There is a kit that does that. Comes with a regular 'american' tap. Taps inside the handlebar.
Then there is a hollow insert. (see photo below)
Outside is an american thread... and the internal thread is metric.

However... I had the kit (from using it on a previous bike) and tried to internal thread a new handlebar on the 310.

Tap started ok... but then ran into drastically shrinking and curving internal handlebar diameter.
Had a 12" wrench on the tap lubed with Rapid-Tap oil, and it wouldn't go. Insert only went in about 1/2 way.
Bummer.

Said the heck with it, just put a regular 'expanding handle bar' end in it. (Works fine.)

If I knew it would run into trouble before hand. I suppose I could have (carefully) drilled out the handlebar before I started, but at that point, it was too late.
After trying to tap... drilling out would probably ruin the new threads.
Also could have cut the insert down... but heck, frustrated at that point.

If you want that internal thread... that is probably what you will need to do.

Not sure why a 'regular' expanding insert wouldn't work. Will later check out the Kobra handguards and see why.

They sell the kit on RockyMtnATV site. $34 with the tap. If you have the tap, they sell the inserts (cheaper) too.
Will nose around out the garage and get the tap size. Can't remember for sure off the top of my head.

There's no need to 'thread'. There's an inset that expands as you tighten it. I've Protaper handlebars and barkbusters and I'm using this:

i think it’s only the aluminum bars that tap very well. The above kit perfect.
