I couldn't find the post where I found out about this. I ordered one for ~$30. What I got was an illegal bootleg copy of copyrighted software. I reported it to eBay. I also demanded and received a full refund from the seller. I destroyed the disk. I suppose the "too good to be true" price should have alerted me.

My first reaction to this was "Wow, a CD-ROM. I haven't seen one of those in a while."

But jokes aside, I know that some people have very strong feelings about BMW not making service manuals available anymore. I wonder how many BMW owners do their own maintenance, or use independent shops.

There’s a “service” coming where you log into a site to access a manual, after paying a fee.
it’s the new rage and coming to your new vehicle soon. In some ways neat, access to most current data etc. But this limbo until something goes happens is quite bogus. And some manufacturers say no! My new Honda came with two owners manuals. One for general operation, the other a mini shop manual covering the basics. Paper shop service manual readily available. Go figure. I do think part of the issue with the 310 is proprietary information and a brand new subcontractor halfway around the World from the fatherland producing units for the emergening Nations. Units that appeal to many not in emergent nations. Second part being that cutting edge techno bikes like modern BMW‘s are not real conducive to the DIY crowd combined with general trend of less DIY folks about. You can get mad about it but. Id guess units more oriented to the hard core race field would be more likely to have a manual available as that population of owners have a very high amount of DIY from the race crowd.
my Honda is a plated dirt bike, not a dual sport. It‘s DNA is direct from Dakar wins and motocross dominance thus much for DIY. If you have not purchased a 310 (or any BMW) yet be sure you’ve a decent dealer first! You need those folks.

I would gladly pay for access as long as it was reasonable. However, I don't think this is temporary. I don't think BMW is going to willingly make the service manuals available any more. It's not just the 310, it's every single BMW motorcycle (and car?). The last year for which you could get any service manual was model year 2019. I have one for my 2017 RR on a CD. For every model after 2019, the service manual is not available, period. If I was going to do a round-the-world ride, this lack of service manual availability would disqualify all BMW models in my mind.

If BMW had manuals available for a reasonable price, for me it would be an issue with copyright.
However, BMW = 'No manuals at any cost' ? Yup... as far as I'm concerned... it's a non issue.

I wouldn't hold onto passage of any 'Repair Rights' legislation in the USA. $Follow the money$.

Read some web reviews of the Ducati Adv Bike.

Change oil ? $ee the dealer.
Change air cleaner ? $ee the dealer. Recall that that one needed a major dismantling of the bike. (Far worse than the 310 !)
Adjust the clutch ? $ee the dealer. (etc etc).

Then we have the new KTM stuff. Enable all the electronic bells and whistles...
then after 600 miles, shut them off... want them back... yup money from the customer.

The of course, then the cars... expensive ones are going to a 'subscription'.
No periodic money to the mfg = no running car. If they have good luck with that... it will spread.

Oh well.

Soon you won’t even have to drive them, just use auto pilot. They will even know where your supposed to go, what to do when there.

If BMW would make its service manual available online I would be willing to pay for it... up to a maximum fee of 150 €. That said it would be smarter to offer a paid subscription (say 5€ or 10€ a month) to all customers.

The best thing to do is lobby your government to make it compulsory to provide an online copyright free version of the service manual and any other manuals for all vehicles that are sold in the respective countries.
