Have been test riding the G310R and the G310GS yesterday and today. I found them vastly different bikes (well except for the engine).

I'm liking the R better atm, the low seat on the GS was rock hard and the suspension was harsher than the R which I thought was interesting.

Test rode a brand new GS with shiny shiny tyres and ten mins in a gusty squall blew it sideways then it dumped a torrent of rain... but we survived!

Anyone who's ridden both, I'd be interested in others' thoughts.

Lower the gs and you will be fine
Are the tires not to hard mine where 2.5bar almost 0.8bar to hard and thats makes a lot of difference to

Hi tonnetje,

I didn't know the GS could be lowered. I don't know what settings the suspension was on or what the tyre pressure was. I used the low seat so maybe that's got a lot less padding than the standard.

Riding both back to back was good though, I realised how much I liked the roadster which wasn't what I expected.

I know why both shops said take it for a good hour/hour and a half... after about half an hour of riding it you realise how amazing it is.

Anyway, love this forum and all the info and stuff here :)

Ta Bas310, I very much like how I can touch my feet both sides at the same time on the R.

As you say, you have to feel comfortable on the bike and then it does not matter what you are riding.
I quit riding motorcycles for a few years and in that time I rode a 125 motorscooter (Honda PCX 125)
It was a nice scooter, light and easy to handle and I could touch the 'floor' with both of my feet.
The reason for buying the G310R, beside the looks and the price, compared to the other 'big bikes', was that it was easy to handle, light, had more power and again, I could touch the 'floor' with both of my feet.
Follow your heart in making a choice and ............ you can always change

I agree that the 'GS and 'R are very different from the sitting and standing point of view, but the controls are the same.
I've only ridden the 'R as I wasn't really interested in the 'GS as it's too close to my main bike and I wanted something smaller and different to ride.
I do wonder about the different seats, how difference in comfort there is between them, it's a cheap way to get different seat heights, but quite crude?

The GS is a very nice machine but I am an old timer and only 5 foot 8 inches tall and I cannot get on one without standing on a block or raised curb because the raised pillion portion of the seat is just too high for me. If only BMW had included a sturdy center stand, I could stand on the left foot peg, mount the saddle and then push the bike off the stand to get riding. For the extra $945 that the GS costs, you would think that they would have done that because I know that there are an awful lot of height challenged folks like me who would love to have one but are just not able to comfortably get on it!

Replying to my own post, I am 5ft, 8in tall with a 28 inch inseam. At a near elderly age, I cannot manage to climb up onto the GS..


Once I get on, I can safely almost flat foot (both feet) with the suspension squished down.

Here I think is the answer for those of us who are no longer as nimble as we were in our youth and do not have the full range of motion needed to be able to lift a leg over the saddle.



It is a small fold-up 10" round tripod stool with a 6" diameter step. It has a line attached and comes with a small canvas bag for stowing once you climb on board. It is small enough to easily be stowed in a saddle bag or case and I suppose you could also use a bungee cord to tie it to the luggage carrier.
