Hi all. Thanks for the opportunity to be part of this G310R forum. I am from Knysna, South Africa. I am collecting my new white 310R tomorrow, the last one in the country! I currently ride a 2006 BMW Dakar (now to be sold), which I was using quite regularly for longer distance tours (3 to 6 days) on my own - mix of 75% tar, 25% gravel. However, my confidence on gravel has slowly been eroding away after a bad accident on black ice 3 years ago. That was on a Honda CRF250L and it is probably also the weight of the Dakar on gravel that is influencing my confidence. Also done most of the tar roads I've wanted to do.

Anyhow, I use the bike extensively for getting around town. I am an Architect and have my practice at home, so I am in and out a lot. I went for the R because it is easier to get around on (based on a test ride) than the Dakar. I had considered waiting for the GS to have the option of occasional off-road, but the GS also has a higher ride like the Dakar and I probably would have ventured onto gravel once a year, if at all, so decided that the cash saved buying the R could be used for a windscreen, luggage rack (ordered bike with the rack), power plug, etc, etc.

I'm looking forward to being part of this forum!

Welcome, and slightly puzzled / intrigued to know why it's the last one in the country? Is that for ever? :)
Enjoy, and be glad you won't get to experience the cold start issues we are having over here with our very cold weather.

Hi girlpower,

I think they will get their share of cold weather in South Africa.
When we have winter, they have their summer but when we have our summer, they have winter (football world championship was ‘cold’)
If it will freeze, I don’t know.
Many trevfgrif can help us out !

I think they also have snowfields in South Africa, similar to here in Australia. Our snow fields in Australia are larger than all of Switzerland.
