Hi guys,

New to the forum, but not to riding. I'm 39 years old, been riding all my life, mainly dirtbikes and fourwheelers early on. For the street, I've mostly owned smaller dualsport motorcycles (Yamaha XT225, Honda CRF230L), but I've had a 2009 BMW G650GS since 2012 and it's been a great fit of a bike for me....until it wasn't.

Tomorrow I will be taking a 2018 BMW 310R for a test ride. I'm wondering if any of you have experience with the single cylinder F650GS/G650GS and how they compare to the G310R, mainly for vibrations/fatigue on the highway?

I originally rode the G650GS off road (fire roads, jeep trails) as well as for touring (max was a 5 hour trip from central Pennsylvania to Buffalo New York). I dropped the 650 on the trails one time, hurt my foot and wasn't able to lift it. That was the end of the offroading for that bike.

I still have the 650, it's in great shape, and I'm thinking of selling it outright or trading it, possibly for the G310R. I'm just hoping I won't regret it.

Anyway, I'm a short, small rider (5'5" and 140 lbs) and even though I know the 650 isn't a big bike (relatively speaking), its like 425+ lbs wet. I'm looking for something a bit lighter, that handles well and won't cause too much fatigue for a combined 6 hour riding in a day (touring a bit, I never do ALL highway, as that is boring, but it could be like a 60% back road to 40% highway tour). I'd much rather ride twisty paved mountain roads, than across the country on boring highways.

I have the 2009 Honda CRF 230L if I wish to hit the trails.

I do like that the G650GS has handwarmers, an accessory socket, and I have a Cee Bailey Windshield on it, but I know I could easily get all of that for the 310R as well. I'm a little interested in the G310GS, but I don't really want to pay the extra when I know I don't plan on riding it off road.

Attached is my 650GS. It's still in great shape with only 22,000 miles on it. I'd love to keep it and buy the G310GS as well, but I don't quite have the storage rooms or funds to make that happen.

Suggestion....sell the 650 and 230 and buy a GS. Does both very well as long as your not looking for big air off-road.
Less insurance, storage, you get your lighter bike very good mileage and lots of free advice on this site.:laugh:

Be aware that the G310's alternator is a bit over 300 watts, and the recommendation is that you don't use heated grips unless you're keeping the revs up. You won't be able to plug a bunch of stuff in. That's why I bought a Tiger Explorer (955 watt alternator) and I'm thinking of installing an Espresso machine on it in addition to the other electrical bits & pieces. Of course, it's 600 lbs, so getting it vertical is an issue when it decides to take a nap.

I have the GS version and, while I really don't have any time on it yet, it's more comfortable and peppier than I expected - I ride at about 250 lbs, so at your weight it should fly. It should nicely complement the small dirt bike that you have in your stable, and your 650 GS looks tasty. Give me a shout if you decide to sell it. Depending on circumstances, I could be interested.

That was a concern of mine as well, until I took a two-day trip in rain and snow with my heated grips (Koso Apollo) and vest (Aerostich Kanetsu) running full time for many hours on end. And I had a Garmin Montana GPS charging at the same time. The GS’s alternator had no problem with the load.

the G310gs is superior to the Honda 230 "power wise" (has the same horsepower as the xr 400 at higher rpms however). the bike is a technological gem (i don't know if it's bulletproof like the Honda or the Yamaha Serrow, both very reliable bikes) that simply cannot be compared to bikes designed 20 yrs ago.

Moto Joe.
If as you say, you are going to use the Honda CRF230 for off road then IMHO i'd go for the G310R.
Its a lot cheaper for one and another- the seat height is lower than the G310GS. I'm sure members with more tech experience than I have more info on
differences in power range/ gearing between the two bikes. You are having a test ride on the G310R so why not ask for a Test ride on a GS before deciding?
I have a Yamaha Tracer MT09 and I had difficulty one time picking it up when I was visiting the back of beyond, so I decided on a lighter bike (G310R) but still have the tracer. As for room in my garage, I uses one of those 'Dollies' that fits under the centre stand of the tracer which means I can manhandle the tracer into tighter storage space using the dolly (it has heavy duty castors) so Good luck with your choice.

My younger son got me one of these for last Christmas - a Dustriders Motorcycle Hoist. It will live strapped to my Triumph in the event I need to bench press a quarter ton + of motorcycle. Again.

Thanks guys! I'm soon leaving for the test ride. I'll actually have to ride the G650GS about an hour down to the dealership, mostly on the highway, so it should help having a fresh ride for comparisons. Now, I have the windshield on my current Beemer and I know the G310R doesn't really have one.

How is the 310R for cruising 75 mph on the freeway? Again, I could see a situation where I'm riding 2-3 hours on backroads and have to ride like 1-2 hours on the freeway, probably all in a days time. I can usually squeeze 225 miles out of my current Beemer's tank, but usually I stop for a break after 2-3 hours tops. So like every 100-150 miles, if I'm trying to ride somewhere scenic.

I live in central Pennsylvania, so most of my riding would be up and down the east coast. Usually just to a neighboring state though, not like down to Florida or somethings.

Plan on 150 miles/tank and you'll have some margin. Most of what I've heard for MPG is in the mid-60s. Couple that with a small tank (11 liters) and...

I just finished riding around 4650 miles across the usa and back and my avg highway speed was about 72 mph I got around 60-62 mpg at that pace. When the fwy speeds were more like 75-80 mph I was getting around 58. The worst I got was in a 30-50 mph headwind and I got around 52 mpg and the bike would not go faster than 65mph. This is where I felt the limitation of 34 HP.

So what was the decision? I liked my 02 F650GS, but with electrical gremlins and slower steering, I'm very happy with my 310GS. I haven't had to pick the 310 up yet, but I rode through some slop that it was very manageable in. I know I would've dumped the 650.

650 to 310gs

I went from a Kaw KLR650 to the G310gs. I had a similar experience with the KLR, we got into some slippery mud/sand etc and I was exhausted from picking that bike up!! While I miss the tourque of the KLR, the 310gs is way more fun to ride and is very comfortable. There's a vibration that I get in the seat between 70-75mph but I got a airhawk seat and that took care of that. The GS feels lighter than the specs indicate but is super stable on the highway. The biggest adjustment I had was getting used to the higher operating revs. The GS gets unhappy below 3,500 rpm. The KLR chugs along at any rpm BELOW 5k. I suggest a handlebar riser as well.

The 310R is a completely different style of bike. "R" will be more sporty. I would go with the Ninja 400 for more power and better handling. It also has a relaxed position, not a real sport position.
