The rear guards catch the spray as it comes off the back wheel helping keep the rear of the bike cleaner, if you look at the R1250GS they come factory fitted.

I've fitted the Givi RM02 to my bike after seeing how effective it was against spray on my previous bike ( Chinese 125cc ).
