I am taking my 310 to the dealer Saturday to have them look at my side stand. When I spoke to the service manager he said they think the problem with them is that riders are either stepping on the left peg to get on the bile and/or they are sitting on the bike with the side stand down.

This dealer in Newbury Park, Ca, is pretty busy and selling 310's and haven't yet had an owner call about the problem.

Unless they find a crack or something I am not going to worry about it but it pays to have it checked.

Well, yeah (duh). That's just about the only way to get on a loaded ADV bike. I've been mounting this way since about 1995 and a couple of hundred thousand miles with absolutely no issues. Until now.

It's not the mounting method - it's the engineering/manufacture.

I frequently travel to countries in Asia and Africa where many taxis are motorcycles. When they are waiting for customers, many drivers sit on their bikes with the side stand out as they contemplate the issues of the day. Some even take a nap that way, streching out on the long seat. Practically all these bikes are 'cheap Chinese' but they sure are durable under these typically very harsh conditions, what with the roads and the heavy loads they often carry, as in three people at a time. You would think the combination of German design and Indian manufacturing would prevent the sidestand issue, but I guess nobody's perfect.

I totally agree, when I had the LT, I used to leave the sidestand down when getting on AND leave it down
when the wife climbed aboard for stability. Bike and the two us close to 1000lbs.
I never thought twice about the stress on a sidestand on any previous motorcycles and never had a problem.
Until now.

So we figure the 310 stand is not made for `mounting`its job is to hold the bike up and that's it, don't you think ?

At this point, prior to any type of repair being done, even holding the bike up is questionable.

57 years of riding and 25 years of using the footpeg for mounting with the bike on the sidestand as I gravitated to taller bikes would lead me to expect otherwise. Especially from a marque of BMW's stature.

I would expect this from a cheap Chinese bike, but they don't seem to exhibit the same problem. The only bikes that seem to have this issue are the early (pre mid May 2018) G310s - both R & GS.

Since there is (a) a worldwide "Stop Sale" of the early bikes, (b) a bit of re-engineering of the newer bikes) and (c) a recall involving a reinforcement of the sidestand pivot it would seem that BMW also thinks otherwise. Disclaimers notwithstanding.
