I’ve enjoyed my 310GS immensely and it’s a fine wee bike. But I’m looking doing much more off road in the future and less pavement. Going to take more money to get the unit suitable for harder off road work and it’s just a tad porky no matter how you slice it. Looked at the Honda CRF 450RL at dealers today. (The CRF300L pretty much same as BMW +/- ) Fully 100lbs less weight! Really swell suspension. It really is a dirt bike with plates. Yeah won’t be near as wonderful as the BMW on the street but I’m aiming at being less on streets. Just too many folks in cars fixing to run me down.

just FYI CRF450L has a short service interval, oil change on every 600 miles and 1800 miles for valve check. depends on how you use it really, but that's the reason i am sticking with dualsports / light advs for the time being. i have to ride motorways and I don't want to get a van.

personally i think ktm 690 / husqvana 701 / gasgas 700 would fit my type of riding not sure if you have checked on them or not.

This is scary…. @ARBOLMANO doing, apart from the Honda, exactly the same as what I started today, and @normanzb saying exactly what I am saying (to myself) on the choice of bike.
I just handed over my GS to the new owner. Will take a breather for a couple of months and then slowly start looking around for something else. The Husky 701 is at the top of my list.

It’s just natural progression. I learned I’m not totally decrepit and riding skills are beyond what the 310 can do. I log so few hours anymore than high maintenance isn’t issue but light weight and handling is. The Desert is calling to me and it’s Springtime! I’m sure I’m not alone. I went big red for many reasons but mostly it was at dealer, a rare bird and a Honda.

Is there a chance to translate vezernii's posting?

Thanks to my wife and tech support, I could translate verzernii's article. Interesting and controversial bike.. I'm talking about the CRF300L.. I had a Chinese replica of it.. off-road, the 310GS will definitely outperform the 310GS in terms of speed and ease of movement + easier!!!! +plus wheel diameter +acoustically more comfortable+high seating position and standing position.. 310 just looks pale here. there are also cons, but in general it is more dear to me than 310GS

Hi Arbolmano

Is this the Honda you're talking about ?

It certainly has a particular appeal. Less off-road, more off-planet !!

Hey!!!!! the old NSU Ketten Krad. A friend in Germany got one from an Airport in Ex eastern Germany. The Russkis used it to tow MIG fighters out of a hangar. Not knowing what treasure they had. After collapsing of the eastern block, he bought it from the abandon Sowjets and told them he is in process to build his own landscaping company and has not enough money to buy a bobcat. So this vehicle would do the trick in his start up phase. Lucky *******, I told him. He also own an original BMW Wehrmachts Gespann 1943. Incl. the MG 42 turret on the sidecar.

Lucky SOB.
That only starts a conversation about the willingness to donate eye-teeth, or ( right ) arms and legs !
Interesting fact: They were vicariously powered by American muscle, as supplied by Henry Ford ( via Opel ).

Hey Will, This reads to me like you already did the deal: "I went big red". Did you trade in your G310GS? Will this also replace the VanVan?

Opel was together with Frigidaire building cooling compressors and later GM sneaked in. This is the reason the Opel factory in Rüsselsheim never get bombed during WW2. Also Opel Cars was never sold in the US even it was a nice car. Look at the Opel Admiral or Kapitän with the big V8. We can go on and on with this topic........

Agreed- I always liked the 'mini muscle-car' Manta ( 1st version ) !

Hijack away, it won't matter since he'll be off to a CRF 450RL land soon anyway. :p

For the record, given (1) his 310 still has the mostly street OEM tires and (2) his obvious infatuation with his Van Van, I don't think he committed enough to gave his 310GS a real chance. 😥

A bike with oil changes every 600 miles and valve checks every 1800 miles completely boggles my mind. At the height of my season, that would be at least weekly oil changes and monthly valve checks. 🤯🤯

That said, I'm hoping he'll work the 450 more than the 450 will work him. 😁

Maybe, if his CRF 450RL looks like the one I linked to, we could tie THAT to Maakipp's boat and we'd have a kettenkrad style motorboat/Schwimwagen.
Now, THAT's an idea ! 😁 (y)
