Top case choice

Hello everyone. I've ridden my 310 GS with a soft bag on the rear but I'm ready to upgrade with a monolock case.
I looked at shad and givi .looking for something not too round, not too boxy...
I also do t want to feel like the box is out of proportions compared to the bike. So wondering what size I should look at to avoid that but also be able to fit one full face helmet and a jacket.
And last, givi has this top box that you can connect for extra break lights which I like a lot to add to safety .

Any thoughts? Pics of what you've done with your 310's GS . thank you in advance.

I bought a Givi E370 topcase and was able to use the universal mounting plate provided to mount it directly without making any modifications. Attached 2 bolts directly through two of the holes in the aluminium rack and attached the other two using the brackets provided with the universal mounting plate. Worked perfectly. Assuming all of the universal mounting plates provided with the Givi top cases are the same (I believe they are) you shouldn’t have any problems or modifications to make.
my fingers are crossed. I am using the Monokey universal plate. It looks like yours might be the Monolock, but I am hoping the only difference in the design of the plate is the attachments points to the case. Thanks for posting this!
I am happy to report that the Givi MONOKEY adapter plate easily bolts into the 4 holes on the BMW OEM rack(which fits both the g and r)! No surgery or adaptations needed. Now of course I find the Givi Trekker Outback box which I use on my GS looks quite large on the little r. I guess I won't worry to much, I think I will just use the box for work commuting and not whipping around the twisities on the weekend.

Hi Peabody99,

Thanks for sharing I just ordered the Trekker Outback for my GS and will be getting the MONOKEY adapter. Would you have any pictures of the GS with the box? I’ve seen people have usually chosen the Dolomiti and not the Outback any thoughts?
I did snap a pic. Personally I think it is too big for a little sport bike. I think it would be great on the GS though. I use the box on my 700GS and TW200 and was kind of hoping I could use it on this bike too. I haven't ridden it yet with the box on as I want to get used to the handling without it so I can see if there is a huge difference. Either way, if I use the Trekker on the r, it will just be for commuting not sport riding.

PS there are a few Monkey adapters-get the honeycomb ("universal") one pictured previously, not the other one that attached to the SW Motech rack. I read some reviews and they are not as good -and I agree as I have that set up on my GS.

I have the universal plate (which attaches to any rack) on the r and my TW.

Yes it does look a bit big on the R. I think that style of case is better suited for an adventure bike. The OEM ones seem to suit the R better.
Good for commuting if you're not worried about the look though.

I had the plastic honeycomb monokey adapter plate on my VStrom for over 92K miles. Absolutely no issues. The metal M8 plate does look spiffier, though.

There is actually a cover to screw on over the honey comb, makes it look a lot better. I haven’t put my on yet bc I don’t have a screwdriver small enough.
Job done. Went with the 37L from Shad. Looks great (I think) and size is perfect for the bike. Was a breath to instal with the universal plate that came with it.

Hepco & Becker "Orbit" hard cases and their C-Bow bag and case carriers. The top case is huge (54) which will hold two full face helmets (in my case my helmet, jacket, pants and gloves). I ride the bike daily to work (25 miles) at highway speeds (70-80 mph) without any issues what so ever. I thought I might get some extra drag which would slow me down and/or worsen my mileage, but that does not seem the case.

Hi,

Do you still have any pic when you installed the case?
I have a Hepco & Becker topcase too.
Not this big one but one size smaller.
I do not really topcases because they, in my opinion, influence the stability (thats why they have a speed limit ;-))

But anyhow, I have the H&B.
Last week, on my way to nowhere, somebody was waving at me and trying to tell me something.
I was wearing my earplugs and could not hear what he was saying. In my mirrors I saw a car stopping right behind me and the driver was walking towards me ….. and passing me to go into a shop. Was 'somebody' waving and talking to that driver ???

I continued driveng further and had to stop some kilometers down the road because it started raining. Time to get my raintrousers out of the topcase …………… Topcase ?!?!?!?! ………….. Gone !!!!!!

Turned around and drove back ……………… finding my topcase on the side of the street …………… waiting for me ???
Put the topcase on the rack and continued to travel to nowhere.
Inspection when the topcase was dry showed me some minor scratches but hard to see.

Don't know why it came off but probably ….. my mistake (human error).
Now I check it twice before turning the key

Be aware ;-)

Can you open

Can you open side cases without hitting top case or do you need to remove lids, could you possibly post a photo from above to show clearance, i am just about to order and not sure of size as 42l is slightly narrower so i am very curious wether i should but the 46L dolomiti or 42l trekker
I may be wrong, but I believe the BMW 29L case is made by Shad.

It is, and in my opinion is very flimsy. Mine was broken into with just a small rod (a screwdriver maybe), I lost a $500 helmet and $150 gloves. Nothing was broken, the lock still functions, but it was just too easy to do for the thief. The 30L BMW-made case appears to be much sturdier, with a stronger looking lock and latch mechanism.
I have never ridden the 310GS with fully loaded top box yet, but from my past experience with 650GS, the box can accommodate full of camping equipment and some large items can be strapped on top by using the additional metal rack. Oh, GIVI says that the maximum load is 10kg, but who cares!

However, it should be noted that the box itself is a bit heavy (6kg) and the overall weight may affect the stability of the motorcycle.
yes, heavy top box can destabilise the bike, causing the fish tail affect. if you watched the movie 'the fastest indian' with Anthony Hopkins, he put a set heavy batteries on the front to stabilise his machine when he was braking the speed record.

But top box is very convenient for sure. Plastic is lighter compared to aluminium. I usually put clothes in the top box as they are not heavy whole taking a lot of space.

I personally opted for hepco top box rack, because I have already the box which I interchange with the one from another bike. The SV Motech system is much more sturdy, which I use in Versys 1000/
I have a Givi TREKKER OUTBACK 42L, I used it with GS1200 and so decided non to buy a new one. However I had to buy two GIVI mounting plates, which were not really cheap (SR5126 + M8A).
Slightly disappointed by the difficulties in mounting SR5126, which was not as perfect as past GIVI products.
It's my 2nd Givi top-case and I expected a higher quality product.

The top-case is however is not on the center of rear wheel, which is not the best option for a top case. Putting too weight in it will make bike quite unstable (lighten front wheel, also because of soft rear shock).
For this reason I use the topcase just for waterproof equipment, small disk-locks, etc. and to put the helmet when bike is parked. When I have transport heavy bags, I use to put them on the rear set portion.

On the internet, it is explained how to modify Givi trekker key lock to open top case with the GS1200 key, but I do not believe this can be done with G310 key.
