Top case choice

Hello everyone. I've ridden my 310 GS with a soft bag on the rear but I'm ready to upgrade with a monolock case.
I looked at shad and givi .looking for something not too round, not too boxy...
I also do t want to feel like the box is out of proportions compared to the bike. So wondering what size I should look at to avoid that but also be able to fit one full face helmet and a jacket.
And last, givi has this top box that you can connect for extra break lights which I like a lot to add to safety .

Any thoughts? Pics of what you've done with your 310's GS . thank you in advance.

I just got the Hepco Orbit 54l installed.
I had to get an AluRack mounting plate and remove the hinge since the universal plate which comes with the box is too wide for the 310GS's Luggage rack holes.

what do you mean??? I ordered the rack for the top box. i am sure it should be just right for gs. hepco are pretty clever to deign the right mounting system.......
This is the picture of the Alurack for the G310GS on Hepco's site. Sounds like your Alurack is not quite the right model perhaps?

A question to the short members here (I'm a small giant with 173 cm/ 5 Foot 8 Inches :wink2:):

How do you get on your GS with a mounted topcase?
Standing on the left foot peg after the side stand recall?

me too, i fitted the hepco system and it fits just fine. i prefer the SV Motech (more sturdy), but i already have hepco top box and side cases from my Tiger 800, so I can just swap them when I want.
I went with the 29L BMW. I think it will work.
I just zip tied this bad boy on there. I’m not too proud 😛 it’s a budget build

Givi M5 vs M8

The Givi m8 plates are made of aluminum vs the M5 which is made of plastic. The M8 costs approximately 2X that of the M5 ($120 vs $60)
I realize that these are being used on BMW's so maybe price doesn't really matter, but I don't take my top case off so the plate is mostly covered by my 42ltr. Outback top case, so I'm have trouble understanding WHY spend the additional $60 on the m8 plate.
Your insight and assistance is appreciated. Thank you
I have the 42 Ltr. GIVI Trekker Outback on a m5 plate. Easy install and the case is big enough to hold my gym backpack++, looks good on the bike IMHO

I have one doubt regarding these top cases - do they all really need a mounting plate? It there nothing that can be mounted directly on the GS rack? What about OEM ones (29 or 30l)?

I bought the Vario case for the 850GS, fits the 310GS rack without adapters.

Thank you!
That is great news.

From my side I can return with one advice to you. I've found my bike as quite difficult to ride standing due to very slippery tank. Simple and cheap 3M tank grips helped me a lot and I see that you don't have such ones yet. I've bought that one for few $: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3M-...k-Traction-Pad-For-BMW-G310R/32961623173.html
This thread was really helpful when I was considering which top case to purchase. I'm used to scooters with trunks and glove boxes, so I wanted a top case right away. In the end I went with the BMW Topcase Light 29l. I'm very happy with the quality and also how nice it looks with my bike. I've already used it for a weekend trip to Palm Springs. It held plenty of gear and kept water out during a brief rain shower on the ride. :)

I was using Hepco and Beckar top box from my tiger with adaptor plate.
Ordered BMW top case which sits directly on the bike without plate and loos beautiful, it's 30 liter and can hold full size helmet easily.
Costs 550-600$ but here in india they are retailing it for approx 250$. Booked inner line bag as well for 55$, which again I felt 1/3 rd of the price they are selling outside India.

I sent you pm. i am wondering that topcase is rattle free. many of the top boxes, even from good companies, rattle. this is very annoying. the hepco boxes are rattle free. me too I have a hepco box that I rotate between Tiger and gs, but I don't like the look of it when I take the box off.
I think now the prices have been slashed. Better to reach Motorrad guys. I would always go with standard accessories over after market accessories.
We made a quick review of the original top case after using it for more than 6 months every day to office.

Thank you for the Review!! it inspired me to get the case :)

In India it is very cheap, just around 200 euro. in uk, it is 325 pounds, rather high. in germany, it is 375 euro.

so can you confirm that the case does not rattle? from the video it is not clear.

Sorry Kris, did not notice this thread at all. Apologies. It is exactly one year that i bought this top case and haven't hear a sound from it. Except the items you place inside 😉
I don't know the current price, but i bought in the Netherlands and it cost me about 420eur. I'm sure the prices have been slashed, but when we bought this from NL, the price in India was super high ~610eur. It was a good deal to buy it around 400 by then, but now, yes. Way cheaper.

I want to report my negative experience with Givi
Some time ago I decided to mount the Givi Trekker Outback 42L on my GS 310.
A couple of days ago I noticed that the top cases was bouncing, I inspected the mounting plates and discovered that the plate SR 5126 was broken (see pics)
I posted the pics on the G310 Italian Facebook group and it came out the other two users experienced the same issue.
So I invite all the those that installed GIVI top case to check the conditions of the plate SR5126

In my case I mounted it about 3 years ago (the pandemic in the middle) 10000km of only urban commuting in Rome's streets (not smooth unfortunately).
Never put heavy weights in the top case, just waterproof clothing, two disc locks and the type repair kit.
Bike parked in closed garage over the night

I went with the (cheaper) OEM 29 liter topcase. The 30 liter is ridiculously expensive. The 29 liter one is surprisingly inexpensive & works quite well. Also fits a full face helmet. Also, I got the dealer to include the topcase with free installation as part of the bike purchase agreement. However, buying one outright is not that expensive (for example, $201.99 at sierrabmwonline.com). Also, it can be easily unlocked & removed from the rack if desired.
I have 1 question. With those racks, what is the maximum top case width that can be installed and not interfere with the operation of the side cases? (Operation being opening and closing of side cases - I'm ok with sequential install/removal). I want a 60L top case but not sure if thats too wide or not?
